03:47Switzerland: Mogherini pushes for political transition in Syria peace talks
Following her meetings with representatives from the Syrian government and opposition in Geneva on Wednesday, EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini urged for a political transition in Damascus.
"My main message.. is to start political transition in Damascus, because in our opinion this is the only way to effectively create conditions in the country first of all to find peace and security for all Syrians with an inclusive approach, second - to defeat Daesh", she said.
Mogherini was called to Geneva for the intra-Syria negotiations following a request by United Nations peace talks mediator Staffan de Mistura who underlined the need for EU engagement. "Negotiations are in the hands of Staffan but I felt that I had to respond to his call and to pass the message that this is important not only for Syrians but also for Europeans that this process starts, works and delivers for the sake of the Syrians, for the shake of the region, for the sake of the Europeans and for the sake of the international community" said Mogherini.
