Riot police used water canon to disperse protesters after clashes broke out at Bolivar Square in Bogota, Thursday. Fifteen thousand protesters reportedly marched through the Colombian capital during a day of nation-wide strikes.

The protesters marched against impending reforms to the city's public services. The reforms, promoted by Bogota Mayor Enrique Penalosa, have been opposed by critics who say they will lead to privatisation and a run-down of the city's infrastructure. Penalosa has already introduced a series of measures including a 200-peso ($ 11.50) hike in the city's bus fares.

According to local media, other reasons for the national strike are rising food costs, lack of funds to public universities and doubling the budget for police and army of last year. The national strike was called by the General Confederation of Labour (CGT).
