Brazil: Protesters denounce Lula's appointment as Chief of Staff

Brazil, Brasilia
March 17, 2016 at 22:07 GMT +00:00 · Published

Protesters gathered outside Alvorada Palace, Brasilia, as inside President Dilma Rousseff swore in former President Luiz Inacio ‘Lula’ da Silva as her Chief of Staff, Thursday.

Protesters, many of whom were draped in the Brazilian national flag, held banners reading “Lula out” and waved inflatable toys of the former president.

The president’s move comes despite Lula being under investigation for charges of corruption and money laundering, relating to the ongoing Petrobras scandal.

After the ceremony, the federal judge in Brasilia delivered an injunction to suspend Lula’s appointment on the basis that it prohibited “the free exercise of justice.” The government is expected to appeal the injunction in a higher court.

The recent scandals involving the current and former presidents, as well as Brazil’s worsening economic crisis have provoked widespread mistrust from the public towards the government and have sparked frequent and often violent protests across the country.
