Latvia: Hundreds commemorate Waffen SS Latvian Legion in Riga
Activists and former members of the Latvian Legion of the Waffen SS marched through Riga on Tuesday as part of their annual commemoration of members of the unit who lost their lives fighting on the Nazi German side during World War II.
Hundreds gathered at the Cathedral of St. John before marching to Dome Square and then towards the Freedom Monument, where they commemorated the Latvian Legion's battle with the Red Army near the town of Pskov in 1943.
A small counter-demonstration was held to oppose the march.
