Switzerland: Officials arrive for FIFA Executive Committee meeting

Switzerland, Zurich
February 24, 2016 at 10:31 GMT +00:00 · Published

Members of the FIFA Executive Committee arrived at the organisation’s Zurich headquarters on Wednesday to discuss final preparations ahead of the presidential election which is taking place at the Extraordinary FIFA Congress on Friday.

Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter was banned from all football-related activity by FIFA's Ethics Committee in December 2015 after the emergence of corruption scandals.

Voting will begin on Friday morning to decide a new FIFA president. More than 200 voters are expected to attend the congress at the Hallenstadion arena in Zurich to choose from five new candidates.

During Wednesday's meeting, executives also set out plans to adopt a wider reform in its governance with the aim to restore credibility of the organisation.

Fresh allegations emerged on Tuesday regarding Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa’s financial conduct. Salman, the favourite to replace the deposed Sepp Blatter, was accused by Conservative MP and FIFA reform campaigner Damian Collins of spending more than £1.6 million (€2 million) during his 2009 election run, including using money from FIFA-funded development projects.

Football’s governing body has also been criticised after they rejected presidential candidate Prince Ali bin al-Hussein’s request for transparent voting booths to be used in Friday’s election. Reports say that the Jordanian ordered and sent the booths to Zurich despite the fact FIFA say they will not be used. The president of the Jordan Football Association has taken the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), in a bid to delay the elections. CAS will announce their decision on Thursday with reports indicating that Friday's vote will go ahead.

Salman and Prince Ali's rivals for the presidency are: UEFA General Secretary Gianni Infantino, South African Tokyo Sexwale, and former FIFA Deputy General Secretary Jerome Champagne.
