Mexico: 400,000 listen to Pope Francis deliver mass in Ecatepec

Mexico, Ecatepec

More than 400,000 worshippers gathered in the Mexico City suburb of Ecatepec to listen to Pope Francis lead mass, Sunday. 300,000 tickets were sold according to event organisers but around 100,000 additional people crammed into the vicinity of the stage to hear the pontiff speak, according to reports. This is the third day of the Bishop of Rome’s a week-long visit to Mexico.

Pope Francis addressed the crowd on the topic of sin, gave a warning against “dialogue with the devil,” and touched upon the themes of avoiding temptations that include corruption and wealth. "Three are the temptations which try to humiliate and humiliate ourselves. The first is the wealth, using what was given to everybody just for me or for my people. In a corrupt family or society this is the bread that you give to eat to your own children. Second temptation is vanity which looks for prestige on the base of continuous and constant disqualification of those who are not as the others. The third temptation, the worst one, is the pride which means putting yourself on a superior level, feeling like you are not sharing the common mortal life and that thanks God every day for not being created as the others," Pope Francis said during the mass.

Ecatepec is a suburb where drug violence, executions and kidnappings happen on a regular basis, with these happening reportedly playing a key role in Francis giving mass at the location.

Prior to landing in Mexico City, Pope Francis visited Havana, Cuba where he held a historic meeting with Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Russia where they signed a joint declaration calling for an end to the persecution of Christians.
