Iran: Tsipras says Iran can play 'stabilising role' in Middle East

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras met with Iranian First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri in Tehran, Monday, to discuss bilateral cooperation, the Syrian conflict and stability in the Middle East.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Tsipras said that "Iran, and its re-introduction to the international community, can play a stabilising role for the wider region, starting from Afghanistan and onto the Mediterranean Sea."

In response, Jahangiri said: "Both countries, with our historical backgrounds and age-old civilisations in the West and East, are capable of playing a significant role in the fight against global terrorism and [establishing] sustainable peace."

Tsipras was accompanied on his two-day visit by Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias and other high ranking government officials. Kotzias signed agreements with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif to strengthen bilateral cooperation between both countries.
