UAE: Lavrov used to ‘unfounded’ Western slights on Russia’s Syria campaign

United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi
February 2, 2016 at 13:33 GMT -00:00 · Published

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held a joint press conference with Emirati Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi, Tuesday, after their meeting as part of his two-day visit to the UAE.

During the press conference, Lavrov called for the Quartet on the Middle East Peace and the Arab League to be held in Munich next Thursday. Moscow was "banking on" a meeting of the Quartet "to see where international efforts on the Palestinian-Israeli settlement are and what needs to be done," he added.

Lavrov also claimed that the Russian air force is doing good work for the international community in "the suppression of the terror threat" in Syria, not triggering a backlash. Allegations "from London or other Western capitals" stating that Russia is "preventing" a settlement are "not supported by any fact," said the Russian the diplomat. "The claims reflect our Western partners' concerns that Russia's Aerospace Forces act in the Syrian airspace together with the Syrian Air Force efficiently," he explained.

Emirati Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan stated that countries in the region should put their differences aside to solve the Syrian conflict. "I think we should stop looking for the blame to put on one side rather than the other," he said, "otherwise we would be unjust and dishonest in ending the Syrian situation."

The Quartet on Middle East peace comprises the EU, US, UN and Russia, along with an international envoy. It focuses on finding a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
