Russia: Downed WWII Petlyakov Pe-2 excavated identified, bones found
The excavation and identification of a Soviet Petlyakov Pe-2 bomber, that was allegedly shot down by a German anti-aircraft gunner between 1942 and 1943 took place near to Sambek village in Rostov Region, Saturday.
The extraction and lifting operation of parts of the plane took more than 12 hours. Initially the military aircraft was first considered to be an Ilyushin Il-2. It was only during the operation that the research association "Mius-Front" identified the aircraft as a Pe-2.
The team will work on cleaning the lifted parts and collecting its fragments in order to identify the accurate model and the aviation unit it belonged to. It is hoped that bones uncovered at the site will also help identify the pilot.
"We hope to determine the fate and the name of the pilot according to the numbered units, engine units and identifying nameplates. This is our main task right now", said the head of the search group Andrei Kudryakov.
