Germany: Supplies arrive at Berlin refugee centre following deterioration of conditions

Germany, Berlin
January 26, 2016 at 20:32 GMT -00:00 · Published

Food donations from different activist groups and neighbours arrived at a refugee centre in Berlin Koepenick on Tuesday, to feed the 40 residents affected by the long waiting time for supplies.

Just prior to that, residents at the centre helped each other out, either with lending each other money or just cooking together and sharing the food they had.

Refugees and those granted asylum have had trouble receiving money from the relevant ministry or their case workers, because too many people are waiting outside the ministry. Shaffar Mohammed, a Syrian who has been granted asylum, spoke of 3,000 to 4,000 people waiting each day at the ministry. He himself went 11 times to the ministry and has still received no money.

Peter Hermanns, director of the refugee center Allende 2 in Berlin Koepenick, stated that many people are rationing their food now and are going hungry, but that the situation has not reached the level of starvation.

However disappointment, anger and frustration are making the atmosphere in the centre tense as people's health is being affected, with many not getting the medication or surgery they require.

Another refugee granted asylum, Ahmed Nasif from Syria, has been waiting for an urgent dental surgery, and is in pain every day. In May 2015 a dentist stated that Ahmed needed urgent surgery; in November 2015 LaGeSo told Ahmed that the cost-approval should be done in six weeks. Three months later Ahmed is still waiting for a response from his case worker regarding the surgery.
