Netherlands: Town hall smashed up, sent threat-letter, following anti-refugee riot
Footage filmed on Thursday shows the damage committed by unidentified vandals to Bernheze Municipality Hall in Heesch on Wednesday night, as plans for a refugee centre in the area continues to be met with violent opposition.
At least two windows were smashed up after stones were thrown at the building on Wednesday evening. The town council also reported that they received a threat letter containing a bullet.
The Mayor of Bernheze, Marieke Moorman, condemned the attacks as "unacceptable" behaviour, stating the city council "won't tolerate intimidation and threats of any kind," in a written statement. Police are investigating both incidents.
The vandalism comes after a 1,000-strong protest against the planned creation of an asylum seeker centre spiralled out of control, on Monday. Fireworks were launched at Bernheze Municipality Hall, which at the time was hosting a meeting on the issue. A dead pig was reportedly discovered hanging from a tree in front of the site of the proposed refugee centre, while residents also purportedly dumped sand on the mayor's driveway earlier in the week.
