Iran: Tehran demands apology for US naval incursion - Revolutionary Guards commander

Iran, Islamic Republic of, Tehran

Iran was waiting for an apology before negotiating the release of several US naval officers, stated Navy Commander Admiral of the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution (IRGC) Ali Fadavi released during an interview on Iranian state TV in Tehran, Tuesday. The commander's comments come after Iran's Revolutionary Guards seized two US boats that strayed into the Islamic Republic's territorial waters earlier in the day.

Fadavi described the correspondence between US Secretary of State John Kerry and Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif's on this issue, saying Zarif had made a "strong and powerful stance," adding that "they were in our territorial waters and that they should apologise for this."

He added, however, that "this process will not take long and Iran's Revolutionary Guards Navy will act on it, upon receipt of an order from its superiors."

Iran's Revolutionary Guards seized two small-sized US vessels with a total of 10 sailors when the boats were intercepted in Iranian waters while en route from Kuwait to Bahrain. Both US and Iranian officials have stated that the sailors are safe and are being well-treated.
