USA: Oregon militiamen of PPN oppose occupation, call for peaceful resolution

United States, Burns, Oregon
January 9, 2016 at 23:13 GMT +00:00 · Published

Founder of the so-called Pacific Patriot Network Joseph Rice gave a statement to the press from near Burns, Oregon, Saturday, saying that his group "does not support or endorse this occupation, what has happened though is it started a dialogue and the discussion."

Arriving with a convoy of at least 13 trucks with heavily armed men from Oregon, Idaho and Washington to join the militia at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge headquarters, Joseph Rice told the press that "We have got to promote a discussion to de-escalate this peacefully," and "We are going to make a proposal to Ammon Bundy." "We need to get the two sides talking, we need to have the county government present here, we need to have Ammon Bundy present and they need to start opening a dialogue," he added.

The armed protest group, referring to themselves as 'Citizens for Constitutional Freedom,' seized the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge headquarters, located around 50 miles (80 km) from Burns on Saturday, after two of its members were scheduled to go to prison for setting fire to federal government land.

The siege began after some 300 people marched through Burns last Saturday, protesting the prosecution of county ranchers Dwight Hammond Jr. and Steven Hammond. Cliven Bundy's three sons, Ammon, Ryan, and Mel are among the militia who took the protest further and went on to occupy the refuge, which was empty at the time.
