Bahrain: Tear gas and fireworks fly as clashes erupt over al-Nimr execution
Bahrain Security forces used tear gas against protesters in the town of Nuwaidrat, Monday, as protesters came out to decry the execution of Saudi Arabia's execution of top Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.
Protesting the killing of the cleric which has sparked unrest around the Middle East, the demonstrators were confronted by police and army forces. Wearing gas masks, the protesters, threw fireworks and Molotov cocktails at the security forces’ vehicles.
Al-Nimr's execution sparked uproar in the Middle East, with protesters storming several Saudi consulates in the region. A vocal critic of the Saudi authorities, al-Nimr was among 47 people who were executed on Saturday after being convicted of terrorism charges.
Nuwaidrat belongs to the predominately Shia part of Saudi Arabia that has been a constant site of protest and clashes since February 14, 2011, when an attempt to overthrow the al-Khalifa dynasty was neutralised by Saudi and UAE forces. The protesters belong to the February 14 movement.
