Saudi Arabia: Erdogan meets Saudi King Salman to discuss Syrian conflict
Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud welcomed Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Riyadh on Tuesday with military honours. Erdogan arrived in Riyadh to discuss the ongoing conflict in Syria with the Saudi leader.
Both countries have funded opposition groups in Syria in an attempt to remove Russian and Iranian-backed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Turkey is also a member of the Islamic Military Alliance to Fight Terrorism, a 34-nation coalition of forces created by Saudi Arabia in December to fight the so-called Islamic State (IS, ISIS, ISIL) and other militant groups in the region. Aside from Syria, the pair were also expected to discuss strengthening energy cooperation.
Erdogan was joined in Riyadh by a delegation of Turkish politicians including Economics Minister Nihat Zeybekci, Energy Minister Berat Albayrak and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.
