Germany: Refugee numbers to be 'drastically reduced' - Merkel
The German Chancellor Angela Merkel referred to the refugee policy and the sanctions against Russia from the Christian Democratic Union's (CDU) annual conference in Karlsruhe, Monday.
Merkel, speaking in front of CDU ministers and supporters, said that Germany should "drastically reduce the amount of refugees" arguing that it is "in the interest of us all" as well as of "Europe regarding the internal state of the European Union."
Later she also mentioned the importance of applying the Minsk agreement as this would be the only way to withdraw the sanctions imposed by the EU against Russia. "When the Minsk protocol is implemented, then the sanctions can be lifted," she said. While she went on to admit that "we also want to have a good relationship with Russia."
This was the 28th CDU party day, a conference which gathers all the higher party officials and is organised every year in a different German city.
