Ukraine: Rumble in the Rada! Yatsenyuk gifted and lifted before brawl erupts

Ukraine, Kiev
December 11, 2015 at 17:50 GMT +00:00 · Published

A brawl erupted inside the Verkhovna Rada in Kiev during a speech by Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Friday.

The fight was seemingly provoked after Yatsenyuk was first offered roses by MP Oleg Barna, and then lifted by the groin from the podium, with fisticuffs ensuing. The subsequent fight was reportedly between MPs from the president's Petro Poroshenko Bloc (PPB) and Yatsenyuk's People's Front (PF). While both groups have since apologised for their actions, Barna was dismissed from parliament later in the day.

Protesters have been demanding the resignation of Yatsenyuk's government with large rallies, including representatives of political parties, public organisations and representatives of trade unions waiting outside the Verkhovna Rada. The rally coincides with Yatsenyuk facing a review of the government's performance in 2015. A parliamentary bloc has formed in a hope of dismissing the current cabinet.

Support for Yatsenyuk's People's Front party has purportedly declined from 22 percent to 2.7 percent. Moreover, according to the Rating organisation's polling, 83 percent of those asked do not support the policies of the current government. Therefore, many within the rally see the outcome as a foregone conclusion, citing the 16 percentile decline in GDP since Yatsenyuk began his structural reforms of the economy, with support from the IMF.

Yatsenyuk told parliamentarians on Friday that he will not resign of his own volition, but will accept any decision that is made.
