Germany: If IS seize Syria 'political solution will be too late' - SPD's Gabriel

Vice Chancellor of Germany and Chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) Sigmar Gabriel held a speech for the political group's 'federal party day' in Berlin, Friday, receiving a standing ovation for his two hour speech on the current challenges that Germany faces. Largely focusing on Germany's growing role in the Syrian crisis, Gabriel touted the recent decision of German Parliament to join the US-led coalition, saying that "it is correct that every political solution will be too late when IS seize the country."

Gabriel started by focusing on the larger issue of 2015, including the Ukrainian crisis, the Greek financial crisis, and the Syrian conflict and the subsequent refugee emergency. Gabriel stressed that military action in Syria was necessary before IS seize all of Syria. However, the German Vice Chancellor promised his party members that if Germany were to send further troops to the Middle East, there would be a party referendum.

Gabriel later spoke about so-called integration in Germany, financial challenges, the socialist fight against rising neo-fascism in Europe, and what he envisages as the socialist future of Germany and Europe.

Germany sent 40 service personnel from the 51st Immelmann Squadron from Schleswig airfield in Jagel to Turkey's Incirlik air base on Thursday morning to join the fight against the so-called Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL). The squadron will reportedly be making observation flights over Syrian territory controlled by IS militants. The data will be analysed and the results given to the US-led coalition for consideration.

This is the first time the German air forces have participated in the Western campaign in Syria and Iraq. The division was taken to Turkey aboard an A400M, which was quickly followed by two of six Tornado jets bound for Syria.

The German parliament voted in favour of sending a total of 1,200 soldiers to support the Western-led coalition forces in their bid to tackle IS on December 4. The vote passed, as was expected, with 445 votes for joining the conflict in Syria; with 146 against and seven abstentions.
