USA: Chicago mayor takes 'responsibility' for Laquan McDonald death

United States, Chicago
December 9, 2015 at 00:41 GMT +00:00 · Published

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel hit out against the police killing of Laquan McDonald during a special City Council meeting in Chicago, Wednesday, where he apologized personally for the death of the young black man who was shot 16 times by a white police officer in October 2014.

Emanuel said "I take responsibility for what happened, because it happened on my watch,” adding “I own it.” He went on to say that following the event, Chicago needs needs "a painful and honest reckoning into what went wrong" during the police killing.

Seventeen-year-old McDonald was killed in October 2014 after being shot 16 times by white police officer Jason Van Dyke. Police officials say McDonald was walking down the street with a knife and refused to drop it after being ordered. A police dash-cam video of the shooting was released a year later, coinciding with Van Dyke being charged with first-degree murder. The footage shows Jason van Dyke first shooting the teen as he walks away from the officer. While McDonald is on the floor, Van Dyke unloads his entire magazine on the suspect. The indicted officer was responding to a call about a car thief who had allegedly been spotted in the area.

The release of the video prompted further anger and protests in Chicago and throughout the US, as accusations of police brutality, racial profiling, and a lack of police accountability continue to dog the country's law enforcement departments.
