Greece: Iranian and Moroccan refugees stage protest at Macedonian border

Greece, Idomeni
December 6, 2015 at 21:09 GMT +00:00 · Published

A peaceful protest was held by Iranian and Moroccan refugees at the Greek-Macedonian border, near Idomeni, Sunday, as Macedonian authorities continue to reject entry to 'non-war-zone' refugees.

Refugees held cardboard signs and chanted various chants such as "open borders!" to send a message to the Macedonian authorities that they have remained at the border for roughly a week since Macedonia decided to limit entry. Syrians, Afghan and Iraqi refugees can all enter Macedonia and continue their voyage up north - without major difficulties - unlike Iranian, Bangladeshi and Moroccan refugees. Those caught from the latter group of refugees on the territory of Macedonia are being deported into Greece with immediate effect.

Macedonia's decision to toughen the criteria for approving entry into the country follows a tide of similar decisions made by several European countries, including EU members, to allow only 'war-zone refugees' entry in the wake of the Paris attacks that occurred on November 13.

Macedonia is a key area in the transport of refugees as many of them arrive to Greece by boat, and continue their way northwards through Macedonia, Serbia and Hungary to reach mainly Germany. Police sources say 2,900 people entered Macedonia on Sunday, which is half the number of refugees granted transit through this Balkan country.
