France: Parisians cast their ballots in first election since attacks
Parisians hit the polling stations to cast their ballot in the French regional elections, Friday, marking the first election since November's deadly Paris attacks.
One man who cast his vote, Malek, expressed concern regarding the election and the rise of right-wing sentiments in the country: "It is a very serious issue to think that the response of the extreme right like the Front National is one against terrorism. We don't vote only against terrorism, but also for a model of open society, fraternity and solidarity," he stated.
Latest polls suggest a neck-and-neck race between the right-wing Front National (FN) and former President Nicolas Sarkozy's Les Republicains, each heading for around 30 per cent of the votes; the governing Socialist Party is trailing behind with 22 per cent. The second round of the vote will be carried out on Sunday 13.
