Moldova: Thousands attend anti-government protest in Chisinau

Moldova, Republic of, Chisinau
November 29, 2015 at 04:42 GMT +00:00 · Published

Anti-government protesters flooded Chisinau's Great National Assembly Square on Sunday, demanding the resignation of the country's President Nicolae Timofti and calling for early elections to be held no later than March 2016.

Moldova has witnessed a summer of protests after allegations of banking fraud rocked the government. In November 2014 the Moldovan state was forced to bail out three banks after $1.5 billion (€1.35 billion) from three Moldovan banks in November 2014. Protesters are calling for criminal charges to be brought against those involved.

The rally is one of many protests to occur this year. On April 5, tens of thousands of people came to the Moldovan capital to demonstrate against perceived judicial corruption. A larger rally occurred on May 3, when 50,000 marched through Chisinau calling for the government to implement reforms which would bring the country closer to the EU. Later in the month 25,000 protesters gathered, again in Chisinau, calling for the unification of Moldova and Romania. Protests continued and on October 29 parliament members voted to dismiss former Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet's government in a vote of no confidence.
