Australia: Anti-Islam group faces off with anti-racist protesters in Melbourne
An anti-Islam group staged a protest outside the Parliament of Victoria in Melbourne, Saturday, where its members squared-off against a larger counter-demonstration. The group, which calls itself the “United Patriots Front,” said it had gathered to demonstrate against recent comments made by Premier of Victoria Daniel Andrews, who accused the group of spreading "hate."
The counter-protest shouted slogans such as "stop the fascists" and held banners reading "no room for racism." Riot police were on-site to keep the two groups apart, and were forced to disperse the protesters in order to keep the peace.
Australia has seen a rise in anti-Islam protests over the last few weeks following the attacks in Paris which killed 130 people and left over 300 injured.
