Germany: Arrests dog 1000-strong antifa protest as AfD rally in Mainz
Police made several arrests during a 1000-strong antifa protest in Mainz, Saturday, with scuffles breaking out between law enforcement and demonstrators rallying against supporters of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
Antifa demonstrators attempted to disrupt some 400 AfD advocates as they gathered in the western German city. The march started at 18:00 CET (17:00 GMT) and ended around 20:30 CET (19:30 GMT). AfD spokesperson Frauke Petry, gave a speech during the protest slamming German Chancellor Angela Merkel's refugee policies.
Official figures suggest that 800,000 refugees and migrants will seek asylum in Germany in 2015, with many German right wing parties and groups, including the AfD, voicing opposition to recently introduced refugee and purported multicultural policies in the EU.
