
UN: Security Council observes minute of silence to honour victims in Paris and Beirut
The United Nations (UN) Security Council held a minute of silence to honour the victims of the attacks in Paris and Beirut, at the UN headquarters in New York on Monday.
The minute of silence was held at the beginning of a meeting to discuss the humanitarian situation in Syria. The UK International Development Secretary Justine Greening, who chaired the meeting, stated that these attacks "have affected countries and people all over the world", for what "the Security Council expresses its heartfelt sympathy and condolences".
At least 129 people were killed and more than 352 left injured, 99 critically, after a series of co-ordinated attacks were carried out at six different locations across Paris on Friday evening.
On Thursday two powerful explosions went off in the Shiite majority neighbourhood of Bourj al-Barajneh in the suburbs of Beirut, killing at least 44 people and injuring more than 240.
