Germany: Future vets practice on fluffy animals in Hannover
Future veterinarians were seen practicing their skills on dozens of fluffy dogs and even a fiber glass cow as a part of their studies at the Clinical Skills Lab at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover, Wednesday.
The trainee centre, which consists of several operating theatres, opened two years ago, mostly for the needs of its youngest students. Future vets in the university are allowed to practice on live animals only after three semesters of studies. Among the techniques they can practice are listening to the heartbeat, giving a lumbar puncture and applying bandages.
The skills lab is proud of its life-sized glass fibre cow, worth ten of thousands of euro. Students can practice on helping the 'cow' birth a 50 kg silicone calf.
