Portugal: Rival protesters rally outside parliament as gov is ousted in dramatic vote

Rival protests congregated outside Portugal's National Parliament in Lisbon on Tuesday, as an alliance of left-wing parties brought down the centre-right minority government weeks after a general election.

Several thousand pro-government supporters waved Portuguese flags and held signs reading "who won" and "democracy is not hypocrisy." On the other side of the square, divided by barriers and dozens of police vans, the anti-government protesters congregated. Opposition MPs could be seen waving to protesters from the parliament's balconies.

The centre-left Socialist party established an alliance with the smaller Communist party and the Left Bloc; a party linked to Greece's Syriza. The alliance used a parliamentary vote on policy to force the government's resignation.

Leader of the Socialist Party Antonio Costa is now expected to become prime minister, heading up a broad left-wing coalition. Costa has previously advocated the easing of austerity policies whilst still adhering to the European Union rules.
