The former French President Nicolas Sarkozy told Russian President Putin on Thursday that "my deep conviction is the world needs Russia," as he met with him in Moscow.

Sarkozy continued, saying that "people need to communicate, to listen to each other, the most important thing is respect" and when it comes to "Russian-French relations: mutual respect is necessary."

Earlier, Putin had welcomed him warmly, joking "are you now Mr. President or Doctor? You are now Honorary Doctor of one of our esteemed higher education institutions."

The Russian leader continued saying "I want to congratulate you on this. I understand that your lecture made a great impression and not only on those who were in the hall."

On Thursday afternoon Sarkozy delivered an address to the students of Moscow State Institute of International Relations and also received an honorary doctorate.
