Iraq: Airstrikes against Islamic State in provinces of Anbar and Saladin
The Iraqi security forces fired airstrikes against the so-called Islamic State (IS) targets in the provinces Anbar and Saladin, Tuesday.
Key IS positions and vehicles were amongst the targets. Heavy clashes had erupted between security forces and IS militants during the early morning hours in Anbar, while the city of Ramadi is also under siege to be freed. Iraqi forces and extremist militants have been fighting for months now to retake control of key cities and towns.
Iraq has been witnessing some of the worst violence in recent years. Terrorism and violence left at least 12,282 civilians killed in 2014, making it the deadliest year since the sectarian violence broke out in the 2006-2007 period, the UN report.
