USA: "Volkswagen take full responsibility for our actions" - VW CEO tells US Congress

United States, Washington DC
October 8, 2015 at 23:17 GMT +00:00 · Published

The CEO of Volkswagen (VW) US, Michael Horn, expressed his “sincere apology” over the company’s emission scandal during a congressional committee, in Washington DC on Thursday. Horn stated that these practices “are fundamentally contrary to Volkswagen’s core principles of providing value to customers, innovation and responsibility to our communities and our environment.”

“Let me be very clear, we at Volkswagen take fully responsibility for our actions and we are working with all the relevant authorities in a cooperative way,” added Horn, who faced prolonged and often forceful questioning from US Congress members.

Horn stated that he found these events “deeply troubling” and that the car manufacturer will do all it can to fix the cars. However he could not put a timeline on those fixes, estimated to be nearly 500,000 diesel VW cars in the US alone. Furthermore VW are still developing the way in which to fix the cars, according to the CEO.

Volkswagen has been forced by US authorities to recall the effected 500,000 cars after the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found out that VW is using "defeat devices." Defeat devices allow diesel car computers to make the engine run 40 times cleaner during tests for emissions. Additionally, according to the agency, VW might face a multi-billion dollar fine as a result, with experts estimating that the whole incident could cost the car giant a total of around $18 billion (€16 billion).

The EPA found the defeat devices in diesel cars including the VW Jetta, Beetle, Golf and Passat models as well as the Audi A3.
