Greece: Thousands of refugees cross border into Macedonia
Thousands of refugees crossed the border into Macedonia from Greece, near the Greek border town of Idomeni on Wednesday.
The refugees arrived in Idomeni by bus, train and taxi from Athens and Thessaloniki before making the short walk across the border into Macedonia. NGOs and aid volunteers assisted the refugees on the Greek side of the border, with many being treated for hunger and dehydration.
Up to 44,000 people have reportedly travelled through Macedonia in the past two months, with most continuing on to northern Europe. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Greece has received 124,000 migrants this year, mainly from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, with 50,000 people arriving in July alone.
