Belgium: EU announces additional €1 billion for refugee crisis
President of the European Council Donald Tusk held a press conference after convening an extraordinary, informal meeting of European heads of state and government in Brussels, Thursday, to discuss the European approach to the current refugee crisis.
Speaking alongside the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, Tusk announced that an additional one billion euros will be mobilised to help refugees in the Middle East, adding that EU leaders also "agreed on increased help to Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and other countries in the region."
The European Council President also emphasised the common responsibility to control Europe's external borders, stating that "it would be unfair to put all the burden on Italy or Greece or other countries. Therefore we all agreed to offer help in every possible way including cooperation on hotspots."
