
USA: Pope greeted by Obama on historic first visit to USA
Pope Francis was greeted by US President Barack Obama after arriving in Washington D.C., Tuesday, for his first ever visit to the US. The 78-year-old Roman Catholic leader will be in the US for a five-day tour, coinciding with a United Nations summit on Friday which he is set to address.
The Pope was welcomed by Obama and his family at the Andrews Naval Force Base in Washington D.C., before leaving separately in a small Fiat 500 car.
On Wednesday, the pontiff will participate in a welcome ceremony at the White House, before parading around the Ellipse park next to the White House as well as parts of the National Mall. Around 15,000 people are expected to attend event.
The Pope also plans to hold an open air Mass in Philadelphia, Saturday, which is expected to draw a million and a half worshippers.
