Germany: Far-right activists gagged by counter-protesters at anti-refugee demo in Munich
Counter-protesters clashed with police, as dozens of members and supporters of far-right party "Die Rechte" (The Right) demonstrated against asylum seekers and refugees at Munich's central station, Saturday.
The protest was met by hundreds of counter-protesters expressing anger at the far-right activists as well as offering their solidarity to refugees worldwide. Several scuffles broke out when police ripped banners out of the hands of the counter-protesters.
The far-right activists struggled to make themselves heard despite using a microphone and sound system, as the opposing side continuously chanted, whistled and booed during their speeches.
Co-founder and chairman of the party in Munich, Philipp Hasselbach, accused the counter-protesters of causing Germany's "decay" through their support of a multicultural society.
Hasselbach has been arrested and jailed several times for a series of offenses. He was also a member of the NPD [National Democratic Party of Germany] before founding Die Rechte.
