Greece: Athens blitzed by parties as city hits election mode again

Greece, Athens

The campaign stands of the various political parties participating in the legislative elections that will take place across Greece on Sunday were around the streets of central Athens, Saturday.

The elections were called after Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced his resignation, shortly after signing the third memorandum proposed jointly by the European commission (EC), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Central Bank (ECB), accepting the bailout conditions, despite Greek voters rejecting the terms of the bailout in the referendum of July 5.

In order to form a government without coalition, at least 151 out of the 300 seats in Greek Parliament must be won, taking into account that Greek parliamentary system gives 50 seats extra to the most-voted party. The electoral polls show a very slight advantage to Syriza, the party of Alexis Tsipras. However, the party has lost significant support after the split from the left factions of the party led to the forming of the Popular Unity party.

New Democracy are polled as coming a close second behind Syriza. A rise in the percentage of the vote for the Greek Communist Party (KKE) and the neo-fascist Golden Dawn party is also forecast.

Electoral surveys indicate that as many as ten million voters remain undecided, or may not vote at all. This will be the third time in the last eight months that Greeks have been called to the polls to cast their votes, after the legislative elections in January and the referendum.
