Russia: Lavrov sees 'no reason' to reject cooperation with Syrian govt against IS
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that "there is no reason" for the international coalition against the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) to refuse cooperation with Damascus, after a meeting with his Turkish counterpart in Sochi, Thursday.
Lavrov said that “to ignore the possibility of the Syrian Army as a partner” in the fight against IS would be “to sacrifice the safety of the entire region to some geopolitical constructions and calculations." He also labelled Syrian forces as "probably the most viable ground force that fights terrorism."
Earlier on Thursday the Russian foregn minister met with Feridun Sinirlioglu, Foreign Minister of Turkey, to discuss the current situation in the Middle East.
