Serbia: Refugees camp on motorway as Hungarian border remains closed
Around 1000 refugees remained stranded in a buffer zone on the Hungary-Serbia border near the northern Serbian town of Horgos, Wednesday, after the Hungarian government officially closed the country's border with Serbia on Tuesday.
On Tuesday several hundred refugees blocked highway traffic and set up a camp at the Horgos border crossing to protest against Hungary's decision to block migrants attempting to pass into the EU via the south-eastern frontier.
Over the last two weeks thousands of refugees and migrants have crossed the border into Hungary from Serbia in order to reach northern countries in the European Union. From Tuesday the Hungarian government began implementing new 'decisive action' legislation to control the border, arresting anyone who crosses without documentation. On Monday, Hungarian military vehicles arrived in Roszke and soldiers were deployed to guard the border. A razor wire fence was also erected along the border with Serbia. Prime Minister Viktor Orban told Hungary's TV2 station that a state of emergency was 'likely' to be introduced along the Hungary-Serbia border.
