Turkey: Istanbul police blast protesters with water cannon following clashes
A group of people gathered on Istanbul’s Taksim Square to protest against what they term "terror attacks" that took place in the Cizre district of the southeastern Sırnak Province, Sunday.
Following a press statement in front of Galatasaray High School, the police warned the protesters to wrap up their demo and disperse. Clashes erupted when the protesters resisted. Police then fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowd.
The Kurdish Worker's Party (PKK) reportedly bombed a checkpoint in Sirnak in the southeast of Turkey earlier on Sunday, killing two police officers; an incident which led to violent clashes in Diyarbakir in which five PKK fighters were reported killed.
Turkish media reported that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has assured that the fight against the PKK will continue until "not one terrorist is left."
