Russia: New Admiral Makarov frigate launched for Black Sea Fleet
The Admiral Makarov frigate, now the third ship of six Admiral Grigorovich-class vessels being built for the Black Sea Fleet, was launched with a ceremony at the Yantar Shipyard in Russia’s Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad, Wednesday.
Representatives of Russia’s Ministry of Defence and Navy and the United Shipbuilding Company attended the traditional breaking of a bottle of champagne over the bow of the frigate as a Navy band provided proceedings with music.
The Admiral Makarov is designed for anti-ship, anti-submarine and air defence missions either working individually or part of a naval task force and is expected to join the Russian Navy in 2016 after testing is completed. Weighing over 3,800 tonnes the vessel is armed with an eight-cell launcher for Kalibr and Klub anti-ship and surface-to-surface missiles as well as a Shtil vertical-launch air defence missile system. It has a 100-mm main gun, two Kashtan guns, two torpedo tubes, an anti-submarine rocket system and can carry either a Ka-28 or Ka-31 helicopter.
