Russia: Zoo animals on the loose after heavy floods hit Ussuriysk
A deer was spotted in a residential area of Ussuriysk, Sunday, after it escaped from the local zoo during heavy floods. The deer reportedly managed to escape from the Zeleniy Ostrov Zoo during the floods by jumping over a fence in an attempt to avoid the rising waters. A number of other animals are believed to have escaped from the zoo along with the deer after the floods damaged the outer perimeter of the facility. The floods were caused by heavy rainfall that started over the weekend across the Primorsky Krai region.
At least one animal from the zoo has reportedly died as a result of the flooding. The tame bear named Masyanya is believed to have drowned in its cage before rescue workers could reach it. Many other animals at the zoo are still trapped in their cages. A rescue operation is currently underway to reach them before they drown in the rising flood waters.
As a result of the heavy rainfall many houses, roads and villages were flooded in Ussuriysk and a state of emergency is currently in place in several districts of the Primorsky Krai region.
