Germany: Merkel advocates ‘no tolerance’ for right-wing extremists

Germany, Heidenau

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said there can be “no tolerance” for xenophobia, as she visited the Red Cross refugee shelter in Heidenau on Wednesday.

The German town has seen a string of violent protests over the last few days, as right-wing extremists and local residents demonstrated against the housing of refugees in Heidenau. Upon her arrival the German Chancellor was met by around 100 protesters, who booed her and called her “a traitor of the people.” Condemning the recent protests, Merkel urged the German population to stand up against “those who question dignity of other human beings.”

Around 600 right-wing protesters took to the streets of Heidenau on Friday night to march against the arrival of the refugees. The protest, organised by the far-right National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD), escalated when several participants started throwing bottles, fireworks and rocks, injuring 31 police officers.

Germany is expecting up to 800,000 refugees to apply for asylum in the country this year, significantly more than the 202,834 in 2014. Parliament has just agreed to permit a budget increase for the support of related institutions.
