Japan: U.S army base on lockdown after explosions rock military building
Security was on high alert at Sagami General Depot, a U.S army base in Kanagawa Prefecture, on the outskirts of Tokyo on Monday, after a series of explosions erupted in the area overnight.
Early on Monday morning, ten fire trucks rushed to the site after explosions erupted from an on-site building. According to a U.S Army spokesperson, the building did not contain hazardous material or store any ammunition. After being woken up by sounds of the explosion at 2.40 am, local resident Yokihito Kita claims that he saw flames around 20 metres (65 ft) high emerge from the building.
Fire services have since quelled the flames, it is not known yet how the fire started.
Sagami General Depot lies around 40km (25 miles) from central Tokyo. The US are currently undergoing negotiations to return the territory to Japan under a 2006 agreement.
