France: Calais 'crisis' requires more policing - May and Cazeneuve

France, Calais
August 20, 2015 at 16:18 GMT +00:00 · Published

British Home Secretary Theresa May and her French counterpart Bernard Cazeneuve signed an agreement to build a joint British and French command centre in Calais, with the explicit aim to tackle "people smugglers."

Highlighting the fact that "there were too many wounded and too many dead" in the Eurotunnel, Cazeneuve added that security forces had reduced death by stopping refugees from entering the area.

May talked of refugees who "may be be the victims of trafficking" should be "removed briskly" for "advice and support." She went on to say that the long term answer to Europe's migration crisis was to stop the large number of refugees, asylum seekers and economic migrants from coming into Europe.

According to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) figures, 340,000 asylum seekers and refugees have reached Europe's shores in the first seven months of 2015, up from 123,500 in 2014. Between 2,000-5,000 migrants have reportedly reached Calais since the beginning of 2015, around 1 percent of the numbers landing in Italy and Greece. There are currently 20 million refugees worldwide, and 60 million forcibly displaced.
