Belgium: Raging farmers block off Liege airport over milk prices

Belgium, Liege
August 19, 2015 at 08:33 GMT +00:00 · Published

Dozens of Belgian farmers blocked the entrance to Liege airport in a protest against falling milk and dairy prices, Tuesday.

The farmers, who came from all over Belgium, lit tyres on fire and made barricades in an attempt to block the airport. The demonstration was organised by milk producing syndicate MIG, who say that the protest aimed to put pressure on politicians ahead of a meeting on the dairy sector crisis that will take place in Brussels on Friday.

The ban on exports to Russia, financial turmoil in China and a glut of global supply have all contributed to the dramatic fall in milk prices, which is causing significant economic losses to the farmers.
