State of Palestine: Demolition of Beit El continues in spite of Bibi's opposition
The destruction of the illegal Beit El buildings in the West Bank went ahead on Wednesday, despite the attempts by Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu to halt the demolition.
The previous day hundreds of illegal Israeli settlers clashed with border police, who attempted to evict them from the so-called ‘Dreinof’ structure. Netanyahu opposed the demolition of the two buildings in the West Bank settlement of Beit Eil, which were erected on Palestinian private land, but the High Court upheld the decision to tear them down.
The pro-settlement Jewish Home party and the Israeli leader are now pushing for further construction on Palestinian land, despite the illegal buildings being considered a serious obstacle to peace negotiations with the Palestinian leadership. Netanyahu has approved the immediate construction of 300 buildings in Beit El and a further 504 are planned for occupied East Jerusalem.
Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories are deemed illegal under international law according to article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention. Israel disputes the article being applied to the Palestinian territories, stating the government has not assisted in the movement of citizens to illegal settlements.
