
Turkey: Water cannon deployed as Istanbul protesters unleash Molotov cocktails
Clashes erupted as disgruntled residents took to the streets in Istanbul early Sunday morning, in retaliation to the large raids carried out by the Turkish police force. The situation in the Gazi district of Istanbul escalated on Saturday night and contained into Monday morning. Protesters started throwing Molotov cocktails and police responded by deploying water cannon and tear gas.
Turkey has launched an anti-terror offensive against the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL) and the PKK, after a recent surge of violence, linked to the two groups, erupted in the country.
As a result, police and other officials have been raiding homes searching for suspected members of the Islamic State, the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP/C), arresting a reported 590 people within two days.
