Mexico: At least nine injured as rival taxi drivers clash in Chilpancingo
At least nine people were injured and several vehicles destroyed when members of the Coalition of Transportation Servers of the State of Guerrero (COSTEG) taxi driver union clashed with another taxi driver union, the State Coordinator of Independent Transporters of Guerrero (CETIG), in Chilpancingo on Monday.
COSTEG members took to the streets to protest against taxi drivers who operate without an official permit, accusing CETIG of protecting the ‘pirates’, as they are known locally.
CETIG members had previously set up a camp in the main square of Chilpancingo in October, calling on the state government to provide more permits for their members. Clashes broke out when the COSTEG members attacked the CETIG site, beating the campers, throwing rocks and setting dozens of cars on fire.
