Belgium: Steinmeier pledges to support Tunisia's economy and security
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier pledged economic and security support for Tunisia, in an address to press ahead of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels on Monday. Steinmeier stated that as well as economic assistance, Tunisia needs "support in reforming the security sector" and the "expansion of the border protection system."
The minister's comments come as the Tunisian government announced earlier this month plans to build a wall along its border with Libya, in an effort to counter the threat for Islamic extremists. The proposed wall would stretch 160 kilometres (99 miles) inland from the Mediterranean Sea and could be completed by the end of the year.
Thirty-eight people were killed at Tunisia beach resort of Sousse on June 26. The gunman identified as 23-year-old Saifeddine Rezgu, was reportedly trained in Libya ahead of the attack.
