USA: Mass arrests at protest marking anniversary of Eric Garner's death

United States, New York City

Police made mass arrests at a protest marking the one-year anniversary of Eric Garner's death in New York City, Friday. Eric Garner died on July 17, 2014, after New York Police Department (NYPD) Officer Daniel Pantaleo put him in a chokehold while multiple NYPD officers tried to detain him on charges of selling loose cigarettes. A grand jury decided not to indict Pantaleo on December 3, 2014. Mobile phone footage of the incident showed Garner, who was asthmatic, repeatedly saying “I can’t breathe".

Police officers could be seen detaining large numbers of protesters, using cable ties to bind their hands before loading them into police vans. During the rally, protesters blocked streets, chanted slogans and held banners condemning racism and police brutality.

The state of New York reached a $5.9 million (€5.36 million) agreement with the Garner family on July 14 after they sought damages for the ‘recklessness, negligence and carelessness’ of eight NYPD officers, the city and the NYPD as a whole. Scott Stringer, the city’s comptroller, announced the settlement but denied that the payment meant the city ‘had admitted liability’ for Garner’s death. Since Garner’s death New York City has begun a pilot programme to start equipping their officers with body cameras to record their conduct whilst on duty.
