USA: Huge smoke plumes over California freeway as wildfire spreads
Huge smoke plumes could be seen over California's Cajon Pass, Friday, after a brush fire swept over a freeway packed with vehicles, engulfing several in flames. The wildfire had been spreading across drought-stricken San Bernardino County since Friday morning and had already charred a large area of the surrounding foothills before reaching the freeway.
Currently, 20 vehicles have been destroyed by the blaze, with at least 10 more left badly damaged, as people abandoned their cars on the freeway to escape the flames. Five homes have also been destroyed in the fire.
No injuries have been reported and authorities have set up an evacuation centre at the Serrano High School in the nearby community of Phelan. Firefighting crews continue to battle the blaze and helicopters and planes have been deployed to drop water on the burning vehicles.
